Projects

Learn about Projects for MassDOT Investor Relations, including The South Coast Rail project, Route 44 Over Route 24 Bridge Replacement Project, and Tobin Bridge/Chelsea Curves Rehabilitation Project.

The South Coast Rail project

The South Coast Rail project will restore commuter rail service between Boston and southeastern Massachusetts. Taunton, Fall River and New Bedford are the only major cities within 50 miles of Boston that do not currently have commuter rail access to Boston. South Coast Rail will reconnect this region to jobs and generate economic development. Phase 1 will restore service to the region by the end of 2023.

Route 44 Over Route 24 Bridge Replacement Project

The primary goals of the Route 44 over Route 24 Bridge Replacement Project are to replace the structurally deficient bridge and to incorporate functionality and safety improvements into the roadway and highway interchange system between South Street West and Orchard Street on Route 44.

Tobin Bridge/Chelsea Curves Rehabilitation Project

The Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge and Chelsea Viaduct are being repaired to keep both structures safe and in service for travelers on U.S. Route 1

To reduce travel impacts for people that cross the bridge and viaduct in cars and buses, MassDOT is coordinating work on both structures.

MassDOT began work requiring significant traffic impacts including 24/7 lane closures on April 1, 2019.

Morgan-Sullivan Bridge Replacement Project

The current Morgan-Sullivan bridge, originally built in 1946, is structurally deficient. The new bridge will be widened to include four lanes for vehicles and Complete Streets improvements, including new sidewalks and separated 2-way bike lanes on the east side of the bridge. New sidewalks will also be added in several locations where currently none exist and connect to the Doering Middle School and the Big E site. Additional improvements include new turn-lanes at major intersections, drainage system upgrades, and additional queuing space for vehicles on both sides of the bridge to ease traffic congestion. The project will also reconstruct and add new traffic signals to three intersections: Memorial Avenue (Route 147) at River Street in West Springfield; Springfield Street (Route 147) at Main Street/Suffield Street in Agawam; and Springfield Street (Route 147) at Walnut Street/Walnut Street Extension in Agawam.
